One door stays closed. Who says it is the only one?
You prepared. You wanted this opportunity. Then came the rejection. What now?
‘Rejection Led to Success’ looks beyond sport at people who found other paths after hearing no. The stories of Jay-Z, Jack Ma and Steve Jobs draw attention not only to perseverance, but also to a change of direction.
That raises a question for your own path: what should you keep pursuing, and what might you approach differently? The article invites you to see rejection as more than a verdict: it can also be a reason to make your next decision consciously.
In this part, we want to show you that rejection is not always negative. Perhaps you will even be grateful for it later because it opened new and better paths. What matters most is never to stop believing in yourself — just like these people.
1. Jay-Z
Born in a troubled neighbourhood and raised without a father, he dealt drugs in his youth. He was caught in shootings three times; at twelve, he shot his brother in the shoulder for taking his jewellery. Without his passion for music, he would probably have ended up in prison. He dreamed of becoming a rapper, but no label would give him a chance. What did he do? He simply founded his own label and released his first album.
“My motivation was that they told me what I could not be.”
2. Jack Ma
A Chinese entrepreneur, billionaire and founder of China’s largest online retailer, AliExpress. His story is extraordinary: he failed high school three times, was accepted into university only on his third attempt and failed in more than 30 job applications. When he applied to the police, every candidate except him was accepted. KFC took 23 out of 24 applicants; only Jack Ma was rejected. He applied to Harvard ten times, without success.
“I have not failed — I have just discovered ten thousand ways that do not work.”
3. Steve Jobs
In 1985, he was dismissed with the approval of most Apple employees. “I didn’t see it at the time, but in hindsight it was the best thing that could have happened to me,” he later said.
Ten years later, he was brought back — a turning point for Apple. Without him, the company would probably never have made its global breakthrough. Instead of sinking into self-pity, Jobs used that time to enter the most creative period of his life.
Conclusion
These people are connected by more than success. All refused to give up or be discouraged by rejection. Did you know that Walt Disney was fired for “lack of imagination” and later received 302 investor rejections before Disneyland was created? Or that Picasso produced around 50,000 works, of which only 100 are considered masterpieces?
Some setbacks prompt change towards something greater. Had Jack Ma been accepted by KFC, he would not be on the Forbes list today. Believe in yourself, work hard and trust that everything happens at the right time.
“Those who refuse to be discouraged eventually get what they want.”
