Ballon d’0r and Lewandowski

July 27, 2020

The Ballon d’Or will unfortunately not be awarded in 2020 due to the Corona crisis. That’s a shame, because it means that since 1956, for the first time, no best player in the world will be decorated.

This decision is particularly tragic for Polish world-class striker Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern star had hoped to win this title this season. Why? Quite simply, his performance has continuously improved in recent years from international class to absolute world class. This development is unusual, since the standard opinion in professional football is that you can only get worse as a 30-something player. However, Robert Lewandowski clearly shows that this attitude is outdated and not correct. 34 goals in 31 games in the Bundesliga and 13 goals in 7 games in the Champions League catapult Lewa to the top of world football this season. The dominant players of the last 15 years, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, played , based on their high standards, only an average season and none of the young emerging stars can stand up to the combination of efficiency and playing ability that Robert Lewandowski offers this season. So it could have been, or even should have been, the year of the Polish star, if we approach this fact objectively.

However, France Football has decided not to award the prestigious title this season. A fair decision? We doubt it! Even though most of the major leagues in Europe had to take a break for several weeks, all the top leagues, except the one in France, played out to the end. The Champions League will also be finished in August in the form of a knockout tournament. Robert Lewandowski’s achievements this season are worth no less than the achievements of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the past 10 years. Would such a decision have been made if Messi or Ronaldo, as usual, had achieved the most dominant performances? Or is it simply because Lewandowski has never achieved a comparable international reputation? Especially with regard to the South Europeans and South Americans, who normally only favor their own players, it is striking that Eastern European players are rarely taken into account when making such decisions. Robert Lewandowski would have deserved this award if he had been judged fairly this season. It is a shame if a lack of recognition and prejudice would prevent this. One can only appeal to France Football to reconsider their decision.

Even without the award, Robert Lewandowski is without a doubt the dominant player of the 2019/20 season worldwide. The numbers speak a clear language.
