The mind cannot be in one place and the body in another if our goal is to align our state with a particular action or state of consciousness. There must be congruence.

If we truly want to bring our body and mind into a desired state efficiently, we must follow what I call “the contract.” The tools revealed to us by science obey this contract—this communication agreement between body and mind.

Humans and our nervous systems are well equipped to deal with current events (such as pandemics, protests, etc.). What we should truly be concerned about is chronic stress. During sleep—and occasionally during the day—we all perform a so-called “physiological sigh”: we inhale, then inhale again briefly, and finally exhale slowly and fully. We do this unconsciously. The reason lies in neurons in the neck that assess the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the bloodstream and lungs. When this balance is restored, those neurons trigger the sigh.

However, we don’t have to wait for this unconscious reset to occur, as it typically happens later in the stress cycle. I therefore recommend that anyone wishing to calm down quickly and in the moment inhale repeatedly through the nose and then exhale slowly through the mouth.

Even one, two, or three repetitions of this breathing pattern can lead to a noticeably more relaxed state. It’s important to note that it takes about 40 seconds for the heart rate to decrease. The neural circuits that control the heart operate a bit more slowly than those controlling the lungs. We shouldn’t expect our heart rate to drop immediately after applying this breathing technique.

For those who have difficulty breathing through the nose due to sinus congestion, it’s perfectly fine to perform the “physiological sigh” through the mouth.

How we manage stress is critical. People suffering from chronic stress should ask themselves whether the actions they take lower stress only in the moment—or whether they raise the threshold of what body and mind perceive as “stressful” in the long term.

Personally, I begin each morning with a Yoga Nidra session. It is a deep relaxation exercise that involves conscious intention. I focus my mind—and I swear—my mental state and positive mindset shift significantly. There is plenty of data supporting Yoga Nidra as a practice that helps restore neurochemical balance in the brain. I strongly recommend it. It’s free, time-efficient, and an excellent tool both for starting the day and for falling asleep more easily in the evening.

4.1 Super-Oxygenation

This is done by taking short, deep breaths in and out—about 25 times in a row. Toward the end, many people experience tingling or mild discomfort. That’s normal and simply indicates that you’re pushing your system. Afterward, exhale slowly and sit quietly for 15 to 30 seconds, waiting for the natural impulse to breathe again.

4.2 Alternative Technique

Take a deep breath through the nose, then another small breath (even if you can only take in a bit more air), and exhale slowly and completely through the mouth. This not only balances oxygen and carbon dioxide levels and regulates circulation in the lungs, but it also activates a circuit initiated by the diaphragm—an organ we’ve all heard of but rarely engage with consciously.

The question of a unified theory explaining the influence of breath on the mind is central. It can only be answered by considering oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, neurochemical content, and more. Every person is ultimately looking for tools to achieve desired mental states.

The brain doesn’t work in isolated functions. There are constant connections between different areas via neural pathways. Neuromodulators such as dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin functionally group several brain regions—such as those responsible for focus, relaxation, or motivation.

For a long time, neuroscience focused on individual brain regions. In reality, it’s the interaction of broad circuits that produces results. Neuromodulators act like strings on a piano, enabling different keys to resonate together.

Our eyes are the strongest driver of what we think, feel, and ultimately do. They set the baseline of alertness or drowsiness—not only unconsciously but also on fast, conscious time scales. Visual input strongly influences our health, mood, cognitive performance, and behavior. It shapes how we experience stress, how we communicate, and how we navigate challenging or high-pressure environments.

When you approach a perceived threat—such as public speaking—something interesting happens: the act of moving forward itself activates what’s called the “courage circuit,” which triggers the release of dopamine. This neurotransmitter is well-known for its role in the brain’s reward system.

If you’re struggling with sleep, expose yourself to natural sunlight early in the day—ideally right after waking up, for 2 to 10 minutes. Even on cloudy days, your eyes will receive plenty of photons. It doesn’t have to be sunny like Southern California—even in the depths of a British winter, enough light energy reaches your brain. In the evening, exposure to sunset light helps regulate cortisol release—our aim is for cortisol levels to drop around 9:00 p.m.

Dopamine is not only released when we reach our goals—it is released on the way to them. This principle, known as the “reward prediction error,” explains why we stay motivated even when the destination is uncertain. Dopamine replenishes our internal drive. It gives us the momentum to keep going—no matter how long the road. It’s what moves mammals from one place to another.
