Learn How to Learn!

March 17, 2020

You’ve probably experienced moments when you tried to recall something you had previously learned, only to find that the knowledge had completely vanished. Even scoring well on a test doesn’t guarantee long-term retention. Why? Because many of us have never been taught how to learn effectively. But we’re here to help—with three proven methods to improve your learning!

1. Test Yourself

No one enjoys exams, but testing can be incredibly beneficial. When you try to recall information, your brain recognizes its importance and is more likely to retain it. Use flashcards while studying: write a question or word in your native language on one side, and the answer or definition (e.g., in a foreign language) on the other. This method removes the ability to peek and turns learning into a test. Even the world’s top engineers perform “crash tests” to confirm their designs. Similarly, testing yourself ensures that what you’ve learned actually sticks.

2. Be Like Muhammad Ali

What was consistent in the legendary boxer’s training? Variety. Unlike popular belief, he didn’t perfect just one punch—he constantly switched up his exercises. This method, called “interleaved practice,” is far more effective than studying one concept repeatedly. Challenge your brain! When studying math, mix problem types. In language learning, combine reading, listening, grammar, and speaking in a single session. And on the pitch—don’t focus on just one trick!

3. Mix It Up for Better Results

Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” If your current learning methods aren’t working, try something new. Don’t reread texts endlessly—instead, read once and then test your understanding. Allow some time to forget before reviewing again. Keep your tasks varied—a bored brain is never an effective one.
